General introduction

The climate trajectory developed within the VLAIO-LA Klimrek is being implemented on 180 dairy farms via the KLIMREK PLUS project. This trajectory includes a climate scan and a climate improvement path. The climate scan calculates the farm's contribution to global warming (the "carbon footprint") expressed in kg CO2-eq per kg of standardised milk . The contribution to other environmental themes such as acidification or eutrophication, among others, is also calculated to avoid problem shifts when taking measures. The climate improvement path is based on the results of the scan and identifies points of improvement for the farm. KLIMREK then proposes calculated scenarios (with cost-benefit analysis) to reduce the global warming impact and increase climate resilience. Finally, dairy farmers are individually supported to take climate-smart measures on their farms. This approach can be applied to at least 180 dairy farms in Flanders with the extra budget from KlimrekPlus.

Research approach

The approximately 180 dairy farmers choose for themselves, and very well informed by this climate scan and improvement path, effective climate smart measures on their farm. Each farm is different and may have been advised different 'optimal climate measures' based on existing practice. Once selected, the individual improvement process starts. All this happens under the guidance of the climate consultant, who assists the dairy farmer up to and including implementation. In addition to individual guidance, the farmer is guided in group learning networks where he/she comes into contact with experts and fellow farmers.

Relevance/Valorization

Climate smart measures reduce net greenhouse gas emissions or make the farm more climate resilient. Dairy farmers are supported in their transition to more climate-resilient and climate-friendly operations. They are guided individually and learn from their fellow farmers. The measures put forward within the Flemish Covenant on Enteric Emissions are also disseminated in this way. The dairy sector as a whole gets a solid benchmark set of the Flemish dairy farms and will be able to assess its potential for greenhouse gas reduction more accurately. The practical guide for climate-smart management is considerably expanded.
